Economy

Subsistence agriculture dominates the economy of Togo, although the government is attempting to diversify commercial agriculture. The majority of Togo's labour force is engaged in agriculture. Togo is generally self-sufficient in basic food production. Principal food crops are cassava, yams, maize, millet, and sorghum. Leading export crops are coffee, cotton, and cacao. Livestock raising is important on the northern plateau and includes pigs, sheep, goats, and cattle.

Mineral products are a major source of foreign exchange. Togo is a leading world producer of phosphates, which are by far the country's most significant mineral product. Industrial activity is limited but growing. Manufactured products include cement, flour, palm oil, cotton textiles, beverages, and soap. The unit of currency in Togo is the Communauté Financière Africaine (CFA) franc.
